The Vibe Coding

The trap

Pro: It’s natural language and you get amazingly quick results…anyone can do it!

Con: You get out what you put in. Behind the curtain, it’s surface-only, like 20 different people worked on 20 different part, management nightmare.

What is it?

  • a software development workflow used by experienced developers as well as inexperienced (no coding experience)
  • applications or scripts are built by simply describing the vision to an AI assistant
  • instead of writing code line-by-line, agent is instructed with conversational prompts
  • the agent handles the technical implementation
  • the user looks at the deliverable and judges what instructions to give next

How?

discussion

There are many ways vibe coding occurs. It’s more of a mindset and approach, not necessarily a specific tool set.

However, there are many sites which make it incredibly easy to build applications just by ‘explaining what you want’.

Since there are many practical use cases where this is great, I don’t want to call out those sites as something bad or wrong.

You just need to know what you are getting…And what it will take to make it something robust before you can give it to end users.

Problems

  • often leads to disorganized, sloppy code
  • over-engineered
  • can become incredibly difficult to support
  • inconsistencies in user-experience
